The Gadsden Purchase was a transaction, where the US paid $10 million for 29,000 square miles of land. This land added the southern regions of Arizona and New Mexico. This purchase established the border between Mexico and America and helped resolved border conflicts that came from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago. This new required land also gave the South the land they needed in order to finish their transcontinental railroad. However, Douglas's idea of popular soverginety would soon make the idea of a funded railroad through the South impossible, since it was highly opposed.
