The United States did not ignore the ambitions of Europe in the Western Hemisphere. The restoration of monarchies in Europe surpassed liberal elements in Europe and Spain even thought to start controlling South America again. In response, Britain and America signed an Anglo-American warning to the European powers to not intervene in South America. Adams disagreed with all this and reasoned that the United States could have Britain back them up in their US policy and no European power wanted to risk going to war, so the backing of Great Britain, with the worlds strongest navy, can help them back off and let them stay in their own continent. A statement issued, now known as the Monroe Doctrine, firmly opposed Europenan colonialism in the Americas.
