A key part of NHS plans were to release vaccines for diseases Polio and Diptheria, which were huge killers every year. Polio affected up to 8,000 people in the UK in extreme cases, and Diptheria reached as many as 70,000, with an estimated 5,000 deaths. This meant the vaccine was a huge leap forward for the NHS.
