Pinochet assumed power in Chile following a US-backed coup d'état on 09/11/1973 that overthrew the democratically elected socialist Unidad Popular government of President Salvador Allende and ended civilian rule. Some 3,000 Left-wing militants "disappear" and thousands more are tortured as a result of his power.
