When the communists fled in 1927, they headed to south China, but Nationalists’ attacks forced them to evacuate.
- They were forced to go on the Long March, which was over a year long. They went from South China to North China, and many were killed by the nationalist attacks. During this trip, Mao Zedong declared himself the leader.
- Mao thought that the peasants could provide the best start for a revolution in China.
- When they arrived in Shaanxi, he had the chance to prove himself. The communists helped the peasants and listened to their problems while urging the peasants to help them in their revolution.
- Eventually, the peasants helped and supported the communists, with many volunteering to serve in the Red Army.
