"On 1 July 2017, the students’ union called for changing the university’s name and removing the on-campus statue of Egerton Ryerson as part of its Canada 150 demands. The university’s stance had up to that point been to recognize Ryerson’s pioneering role in the public education system, while acknowledging his contributions to the abusive system of residential schools, a harmful error made while in a position of authority" (Semple, 2017).
