When the republican government lost territory in mainland Spain the Mexican goverbemtn took in refugees. It is estimated that Mexico hosted between 20,000 and 25,000 Spanish refugees between 1939 and 1942, largely during the government of President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río. Of these refugees, it is estimated that "intellectual" or "elite" immigration comprised approximately 25% of the total (approximately 5,500).
