During the recent severe weather the Natives at the Kaik have been m a very bad plight. Their pvtato crops this last season have been a comparative failure, and the capacity the ordinary Native has of running into debt has resulted m the fact that the rents of some of them are pledged to the local storekeepers for some considerable time to come. During the recent inclement weather the children of some of the Maoris of different pahs have boarded themselves out on John Tabuki, an old and decent Maori, his total family, for whom he had to provide for the last seven weeks, amounting to thirt en souls. The terrible state of the weather prevented the getting of shell or other fish, and the result was that for the past few days the thirteen people have been absolutely without food.
