12 maio 1874 ano - Request to make Taraouta/Barry's Bay a Reserve

Descrição:

Barry 's Bay, the western of the three bays at the Head of Akaroa Harbour , was frequented by the Maori in early European days, and is referred to by Captain Greaves one time harbour master at Akaroa, as Kai Bay . The Maori had a small kainga near the northern part of the bay known as Ihutu. On May 12th, 1874, local Maori requested the Canterbury Provincial Government to make a reserve there and erect a small Maori hostel on it. The Maori name of Barry 's Bay is Taraouta, and the creek is called Kaituna. Te Kai waitau is the swampy foreshore.
