The author of Luke used the Gospel of Mark as a source for the narrative of Christ's earthly life, and likely used a hypothetical sayings collection called the Q source for Jesus' teachings.[note 1][7][8][9] Luke also contains material found in no other gospels, often referred to as the L (for Luke) source.
