Kathy Kozachenko became the first openly gay or lesbian person to be elected to a public office.
Kozachenko won a seat on the Ann Arbor, Michigan City Council in 1974.

"I don’t think I was brave, because I was in a college town where it was cool to be who I was,” she says. “On the other hand, I stepped up and did what I felt needed to be done at the time. Maybe that’s the whole story, that ordinary people can do something that then other people later can look back on and feel really good that they did this." - Kathy Kozachenko

Significance: Brings equality for LGBT people and shows that LGBT people can become whatever they want to be and can be equal to everyone else.
