Governor Orval Faubus called the Arkansas National Guard to block the blacks students entering into the high school on the first day of school. These black students who were going to Central High School are called the Little Rock Nine and challenged public school segregation. Later on, President Eisenhower sent federal troops to escort the Little Rock Nine into the school.

Significance: Start of desegregation within public schools.
