The Spanish economy is spiraling down due to the global depression, and Primo de Rivera’s resignation, who had died less than two months later. The monarchy was too closely associated with dictatorship, and the Republican had adapted to Alfonso’s meddling in Spanish politics. On August 17, 1930 an alliance of mixed liberal monarchists, Catalan politicians, and Republicans had discussed and agreed to overthrow the king.
