- Lenin dies, leaves no indication of who is to succeed him
- "Lenin's Testament" left, which was a collection of critical remarks on leading members of the party's personalities. This left no clear successor
- The testament was critical of Stalin, saying that he did not know how to exercise his power with necessary caution
- The USSR declared to be run by collective leadership
- Lenin's word treated as law after his death, and the charge of "factionalism" (the splitting of the party into factions from disagreement) used as a charge of being anti-Leninist by others. Reduced questioning of authority.
