It was discovered by journalist Seymour Hersch that the US forces under the command of Lt. William L. Calley, Jr. had massacred nearly 350 Vietnamese civilians in the village of My Lai. Lieutenant Calley was court-martialed and sentenced to life in prison. Lt. Calley claimed he was “following a direct order.”
