Almost immediately after John F. Kennedy was pronounced dead at 1:00 p.m. Vice President Johnson was sworn in while flying in on Air Force One. Johnson’s presidency began during the tragedy of Kennedy’s assassination and ended in the tragedy of the Vietnam War. Johnson was quoted saying “All I have, I would have given gladly not to be standing here today.”
