In 1890 there was the Triple Alliance...Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy to help each other under certain circumstances. France and Germany were bitter enemies because of France's defeat in the war of 1870-71, and the resulting loss of Alsace and Lorraine to Germany. France and Russia would later form the Franco-Russian alliance of 1894.
