The Conservative president was replaced by left wing president Manuel Azana. Soon after the election, military leaders, such as Emilio Mola, Francisco Franco, Juan Yague, Gonzalo Queipo de Llano and José Sanjurjo, began plotting to overthrow the popular government, which resulted in the outbreak of the spanish civil war.
