In January 1933, farmers in the Cadiz providence had become frustrated with the pace of agricultural reforms, and, inspired by the anarchists, they decided to kill several members of the Civil Guard in protest and start an uprising. The government sent in the Assualt Guard to help deal with the situation, and the Assualt Guard ended up killing twenty civilians, many after prolonged torture. The Guards also set houses on fire, and many people ended up burning alive. These actions created a deep unrest and distrust in Spanish farmers, industry workers, and peasants. They strayed from believing in and supporting Azana’s government.
