In 1939 before WW2 started Germany and the Soviet Union singed the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact. This meant that they agreed to not take any military action against each other for the following 10 years. Soviet leader Joseph Stalin saw this pact as a way to keep peace with Germany while building up the military whereas Adolf Hitler used it to make sure he could invade Poland. This pact included an agreement that later on they would both divide up Eastern Europe. 2 years later the Nazis invade the Soviet Union breaking apart the pact.
