11 jan 1933 ano - Casas Viejas Massacre

Descrição:

Casas Viejas was a small rural village in Cadiz, Spain. There had been an increase in the spread of the anarchist movement, especially from the agricultural workers who were exploited in the past and the people who were poor and hungry. For instance, the CNT (Confederación Nacional del Trabajo) had organized protest marches thinking they were going to start a revolution. The government, knowing there were bad riots occurring in Cadiz, sent military guards there to regain control of the situation. Many villagers fled from the area but one group of anarchists stayed put in their house and was not going to surrender (they were said to have started an attack on the local barracks). Shots were fired and eventually guards set the house on fire and killed the anarchists and a bunch of relatives. An additional 14 people were later executed and the public image of the regime was worsened. The far left would accuse the moderate left of murdering the villagers.
