The first successful flight was made near Kitty Hawk which was an isolated village on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Kitty Hawk had sandy dunes to safely land on as well as steady winds. The brothers had already solved the problem of controlled flight a year earlier.
It was the powered flight that proved to be a challenge. They had an engine with 12-horsepower and once all the pieces were ready, they sent it to Kitty Hawk where they then assembled the plane. It was Orville who flew the first test flight which lasted 12 seconds and went a distance of 36.5 meters, there was five witnesses at this flight and there were three more test flights that day alternating the flying between the two brothers. The last flight that day was one with Wilber flying that lasted 59 seconds and went a total of 259.6 meters.
Significance-
The significance of this amazing invention was that it completely revolutionized travel and without this breakthrough we would never have the ability to go around the would in less than 24 hours in planes that carry hundreds of people. These planes not only can be used to transport people but also supplies, planes were also a game changer in wars.
