The sale of Auckland City Council-owned houses is to proceed despite a Race Relations Office investigation into its impact on Maori and Pacific Island tenants.

Opponents of the sale policy wanted it stopped while the inquiry was being held. But the council says housing is not its responsibility and argues that ratepayers deserve better than the 3 per cent return on the $70 million investment.
