25 mar 1807 ano - Abolition of the Slave Trade Act

Descrição:

The act of trading slaves peaked during the 1780s and many people began to question if it was ok to have a system as morally wrong and brutal as the slave trade was, the house of commons were debating as to whether slave trade contradicted the rights of men and the laws of God as early as 1776. People such as Olaudah Equiano and Thomas Clarkson published what they knew about slave trade and spread the word; people began to campaign.
The reason why they tried to get rid of Slave Trade instead of just getting rid of slavery altogether was because they believed that it would be easier to convince the government to ban slave trade and then slavery would eventually wither out. When they passed this act, it meant that slave trade throughout the British empire was banned, any British captain that was caught transporting slaves would be fined £100 for every slave found on the boat. Unfortunately, this didn’t stop slavery, nor did it completely stop slave trade, if ships carrying slaves thought they were in danger of being caught the captain would often order the slaves to jump off the ship, thus reducing the fine.

Significance-

It meant less slaves and less trading which in turn did damage the economy of different places, but it also helped Africans have more control over what happened to them as they were less often forced into slavery (although they were till smuggled as slaves).
