At the age of 25, Bishop William T. Vernon became the president of Western University in 1896. A well-known speaker, educator, and writer. Vernon wrote the curriculum and helped secure financial resources for the institution. In 1906, he became the United States Registrar of the Treasury appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt. His name appeared on all U.S. currency during his service. President William H. Taft reappointed Vernon in 1912. Shortly after, Vernon resigned and returned to school administration and ministry. In 1920, he became bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, designated to the Transvaal district in South Africa for four years. Many years later, he returned to Western University, appointed as head of the industrial department.
