In 1862, Eben Blachly, a Presbyterian minister, and his wife Jane started educating escaped slaves and free African Americans informally in the Brewing building at Quindaro. The school became recognized as Freedman's University, on February 23, 1865. By the late 1860s, the university covered much of the original Quindaro townsite, due to Blachly and other residents contributing property. The school eventually became Western University.
