John Brown led an armed revolt against a federal armory in Virginia. He was attempting to start a slave revolt and destroy slavery.
This increased sectionalism in the US because different politicians with different viewpoints took different sides. Some people wanted John brown to be executed, but some wanted him to live out his life in an insane asylum.
