1917 is the year of the Russian Revolution. This is when the Bolsheviks overthrew Czar Nicholas II and effectively began the rule of communism.
In Animal Farm, Czar Nicholas II is represented by Jones. He forcibly removed by the animals, who then enact communism as thought by Old Major (Orwell 13).
