In September 1957, Canada and the U.S. came together to form the NORAD agreement (It wasn't formally signed until May of 1958). This was a bi-national command, centralizing operational control of continental air defenses against the threat of Soviet bombers. The NORAD agreement has been reviewed and renewed a number of times since 1957.
