The Compromise of 1850 was significant because it avoided a major crisis. The result of the compromise was that the south strengthened the fugitive slave law, the north gained California, and that slave trade was prohibited in Washington DC, but slavery was not. This didn't really increase or decrease sectionalism, it more of just neutralized the issues to avoid any more serious conflicts.
