Who: Rutherford B. Hayes, Samuel B. TildenWhat: It was an informal deal that resolved the intensely disputed election of 1876. The Democrats accepted Hayes's victory in exchange for the removal of federal troops from the South that allowed for the survival of Republican governments in South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana.
Where: The United States
Why: The compromise effectively marked the end of the Reconstruction era by allowing Democrats to nearly regain complete control over the South. Many black Republicans in the South regarded the compromise as a betrayal since a lot of them were disenfranchised by state governments without Republican interference. Jim Crow Laws and black codes continued to be passed in the South that made life for African Americans even worse.
