Tod was attacked by garmin in the Castle and was taken to the Keep where Marcia lives which is one of the hubs for the system of ancient ways. While Marcia goes to tell Septimus what happened she is alerted to danger in the Keep by a magical whistle she Tod. The danger was garmin chasing Snow Princess Driffa, the Most High and Bountiful who Septimus met earlier in the book. Marcia did a spell that froze everything in ice to protect everyone there and then had to unfreeze the snow princess and her horse and some drummins who helped look after the Keep. When unfrozen Snow Princess Driffa tells them of the dangers of her homeland and resquests aid
