1 jan 1887 ano - Flash Photography
Descrição:
After several years of having almost no money, having to work very hard, and being alone, Riis read about a new invention called Flash Photography. It allowed people to take pictures in the dark, when the most things happened in the city. He started to take pictures of the Lower East Side of New York City because it had the most tenements, poverty, and crime. Also, he discovered the infant death rate in the Lower East Side was around 10%. He compiled "illustrated essays" and submitted them to several magazines. An editor from Harper's New Monthly Magazine told him that his photos were good, but not his essays.
