Various parts of the nervous system develop from the ectoderm through the process of neurulation. The neuroectoderm tissues along the embryo thicken into the neural plate. During the 4th week, tissues fold upward on the neural plate and converge to create the neural tube. In this time the anterior neural tube dilates and subdivides to create vesicles that will become brain structures. The neurulation process establishes parts of the central nervous system and skeleton.
