The death toll of 3,000 US soldiers had the opposite effect of what many people had hoped. On January 10th, 2007, President Bush announced on live national television that he was deploying an additional 20,000 troops to Baghdad. Despite the strong push back, Bush justified the surge by saying that failure in Iraq now would have worse consequences than deploying more troops. He wanted the troops in Baghdad to control the chaos of the failing capital. (NY Times)
