Harry enters the chamber, where he meets Tom Riddle, who explains that he is the memory of a young Voldemort living a diary, and was responsible for opening the Chamber of Secrets decades ago, and for opening it now through possessing Ginny. With the the help of Fawkes the phoenix and the sword of Gryffindor pulled from the sorting hat, Harry kills the basilisk and uses it's fangs to destroy the diary, and Tom Riddle.
