The Treaty of Tordesillas was the popal announcement that declared the Line of Demarcation. The Line of Demarcation was an imaginary line that ran through Earth, and every territory west of the line could be claimed by Spain, and every territory to the east of the line could be claimed by Portugal. The treaty was to make sure that Catholics weren't going to war against other Catholics for territory.
