After an outbreak in 1902, the board of health in Cambridge required all city residents to be vaccinated against smallpox A man named Henning Jacobson said that this was a violation of his rights and took the case to the supreme court. He lost and the court ruled that the state could enforce the law in cases of communicable diseases for the good of the public ("History of Anti-vaccination Movements")
