Colonel James Fannin was ordered by General Sam Houston to retreat from Goliad and head north because of the approaching Mexican Army, but Fannin had to wait on his some of his men to come back. The men eventually came back, so Fannin and the army started to retreat. General Jose Urrea eventually caught up with Fannin. The Texan army got cornered in a wide-open field and was outnumbered 300 to 500. There was a bit of fighting, but Fannin surrendered to try to save his men.
