Japan actively joined the Axis States on December 7, 1941, when air and sea attacks (with the help of tiny submarines) attacked Pearl Harbor, the US naval base on Oahu Island, Hawaii. Eleven vessels were sunk, dozens of vessels were damaged and some 3,300 U.S. Navy men were killed. Following this action, the United States declared war with Japan and decided to intervene in full force during World War II. Over the next few months, Japan took over many Pacific islands, and by February 1942 had also captured Malaya, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Singapore. In March 1942, the Japanese conquered the Dutch East Indies and parts of New Guinea. In May 1942, the Japanese conquered Burma, threatening India (British-controlled) and Australia.
