The General Enclosure Act passed by the British Parliament enabled a village to enclose its land. The Enclosure Acts turned common land into private land. This forced families who could not afford the price of land to turn to other forms of work. The Enclosure Act was a movement that began in the early 17th-century, so this was a continuity of previous practices.
