In 1832, Moses Grinter (1804-1864) and his wife, Annie Grinter, or Windagmen of the Turtle Clan, (1820-1905), were settlers in 1831. Annie Grinter became a U.S. citizen along with 25 other Delaware (Lenape) women as part of their resettlement. The Grinters operated a ferry crossing and supply store on the Kaw River just east of Bonner Springs. It was used by freighters and Dragoon soldiers traveling from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Scott, or to connect with the Santa Fe Trail. In 1857, after the treaty of 1854 removed the local tribes to Oklahoma, whites were allowed to own the land that once belonged to the Delaware, Moses Grinter built a mansion, Grinter House, that is the oldest home still standing in the county. Grinter was sent to the area by the government to operate the ferry. In the early days of the ferry, only Dragoon soldiers were allowed to use it, as whites were not allowed on Indian lands without permission.
