This is seen as a turning point in the war. In January 1968, the communists launched an attack on large cities in South Vietnam, including the capital Saigon, where the American embassy was located. The Vietcong hoped for a revolution to materialise, but it did not and they were pushed back.
Despite it's failure, the Tet Offensive is seen as a turning point as it was realised they the US would have to greatly increase the number of troops to win.
This shocked many Americans as they had been told that there was "light at the end of the tunnel", the government was lying causing a huge decrease in support for the war. This created a "credibility gap" between the US government and the civilians which has never recovered.
