Beginning with South Carolina on December 20, 1860, the Southern states gradually began seceding from the Union. This continued until February 8, 1861, when the Confederacy was officially established and a war was inevitable. The formation of the new party confirmed the division of the United States of America, and declared the South's serious intentions of standing against the Union for what they believed in.
