This is really good for Riel because it makes the English, led by Doc Schultz, give up since they don't have a cause to fight for. They want Riel to release the prisoners but have no other cause, and are very hungry. So when Riel decides to let them go, the English have no reason to fight and leave, but then are captured by Riel because of the promise of a free meal.
