The Barbary War was a conflict between the American navy and Barbary pirates from Tripoli. Th e pirates attacked vessels in the Mediterranean. While most countries were content to just pay them off, America decided to fight. This marked the beginning of an important part of American political culture, which is a need to do things differently than everyone else. America refused to pay the pirates off, deciding instead to fight.
