Description: During this battle, a fleet of American warships under Commodore Thomas Macdonough effectively destroyed a fleet of the British navy at Lake Champlain. The British forces in the north were forced to retreat to Canada.

Significance: This battle forced the British to give up their military campaign in the north, which was one of their main military plans. This turn of events provided American troops and American society in general with a much needed morale boost. This military and social momentum allowed the United States to suriveve the war.
