President Thomas Jefferson signed an agreement to pay the French $15 million for the entirety of the Louisiana Territory. Jefferson feared that if Napoléon gained control of the Mississippi valley, there could be war between France and the United States. This event was culturally significant due to the completely new culture that moved into the new territory, specifically white settlers.
