During this, the stock market crashed and left the economy in a tough spot, with essentially nothing. This caused the banks to collapse. Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. President at the time. declared a "Bank Holiday" that required all banks to close due to this crisis. The banks were only allowed to reopen if they could prove they were finacially stable enough to do so.
