1 jan 1890 ano - St. Michael's, Auburn

Descrição:

129 years ago on June 12th, 1890, several Auburn residents attending services in Lewiston organized a new church across the Androscoggin River, known as the Church of the Heavenly Rest. The first services were held at the G.A.R. Hall on Main St. while the search for a permanent building site was underway. Our first Rector, Rev. William Henry Washburn, harbored dreams of building an English Country-style stone church. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1895 before achieving his dream. The following year, Washburn’s plans were changed, and the existing parish hall was renovated and converted into a ‘proper’ church. As part of these renovations, our magnificent Washburn Memorial stained glass windows were installed above the altar.
The church briefly closed from October 1903 to September 1905, and soon after reopening was renamed St. Michael’s. In 1921, our current Hook and Hastings organ was installed, and our church has been filled with its beautiful music every Sunday since. 1960 saw the first major reconstruction in 64 years. The church building was raised, an Undercroft built and a new parish meeting house constructed. In 1990 as part of the Second Century project, the 1960 meeting house was replaced by the current building which we enjoy to this day.
2020 will be the 130th year of our existence as a church serving the Auburn area. “This Week in St. Michael’s History” is part of our weekly church newsletter, informing parishioners and friends of the events that took place a particular week from 1890 to the present, along with special sections on various topics related to our church and neighborhood. We look forward to many more years of service!

St. Michael’s Episcopal of Auburn, ME has been working in conjunction with High Street Congregational Church in developing relationships with neighbors of the two (same block) churches. We gather together once a month for potluck dinners as we get to know each better. The goal is to transfer leadership and ownership of the dinners to the neighbors. We also hold a BBQ each summer attended by 100+- people. We host informational events at the dinners that help the neighbors learn more about being more supportive neighbors. Both churches have acknowledged the interest in residents and have seen their participation in the dinners increase.
